| On December 16, 1916, Rasputin was assassinated.
Shortly before, he used to say that, if something
happened to him, the dynasty would collapse in a couple
of months. Unfortunately, his prophecy came true. In
early 1917, Russia exploded in riots. On March 5, Nicolas
II abdicated. His brother Mikhail did the same. After the abdication, family stayed in the palace for some time; the children were sick with measles and too weak to move. On the other hand, they had no place to go: their royal European relatives were frightened by the events in Russia and afraid that the revolution would spread to their respective countries. Kerensky's attempts to help Romanovs leave fell through. At first, Provisional Government evacuated the Tsar's family to Tobolsk, in Siberia. There, they tried to live a normal, modest life. Nickolas chopped firewood, swept the courtyard, and helped Alexandra and daughters with chores. But then, a sympathizer made an unsuccessful attempt to help them escape. The Bolsheviks moved the family to Yekaterinburg and have quartered them at the house that belonged to a merchant Ipatyev. Kaiser Wilhelm futilely tried to save at least Alexandra with the children and Alix' sister Ella as a German Princesses through the offices of the International Red Cross. But the Bolsheviks were certain against the family leaving Russia. At the same time, the White Army troops were approaching Yekaterinburg, threatening to disturb the Bolsheviks' plans to put the Tsar on trial. Panicking, the local Party leaders cabled Moscow, asking for instructions. In response, on July 17, 1918, Lenin issued the execution order. Immediately, the entire family and their servants were taken to the basement and executed. These two loving hearts were inseparable to their last dying moment. How brightly, how vividly shined their love! It was a true union of two caring souls, free of petty deception. With the time, they grew inseparable and became one whole. It is impossible to talk about Nickolas without mentioning Alexandra, his true friend and loving wife. In this loving family children were brought up in peace and harmony with the world. They caused evil to no one; and yet they were slain by evil hands. As the Orthodox Christians say, "May the earth be as soft as feathers to their ashes". We can echo this wish. Finally, their remains have received a proper burial, and their souls found peace in the glades of eternity.
